In Europe and especially in Italy, we are used to always having fruit in the house. But not everywhere in the world is fruit such a readily available commodity, quite the contrary! In Japan, in fact, it is considered almost at the level of a luxury good so much so that it is included among the items on the wedding list. So let’s delve into this curious side of fruit by discovering the 4 most expensive fruits in the world.

the 4 most expensive fruits in the world

Yubari King, the world’s most expensive melon

The first of the 4 most expensive fruits in the world is the Yubari King, a variety of melon that can fetch more than $20,000 per piece. Again, the attention to the fruit’s perfection is almost surreal: the shape is perfectly spherical, the skin reticulate and regular, and the taste, according to those who have tried it, is truly unique.

The Sekai-Ichi Apple

The Sekai-Ichi apple weighs about one kilogram and is sold individually at a price around $20, which, compared to other fruits, is considered acceptable. The price is also due to the special cultivation technique: pollination of the plants is done by humans using a kind of wand, then the apples are passed one by one to make sure they are perfect, spotless, and of the desired size. This is followed by washing with mead, labeling and packaging where care in packing is manic.

Black watermelon and square watermelon

Moving into the field of the curcubitaceae family, we find the Densuke watermelon, which has an almost black skin and is grown only in Toma, on the island of Hokkaido. Needless to say, its price, also given its low production, is exorbitant; in fact, it never falls below $250 for a weight of 8-10 kilograms. The texture is crisp, with very few seeds and a much sweeter flavor than the watermelons we are used to. Even more distinctive, however, are the square watermelons, whose price oddly falls around $100. Their geometric shape is entirely artificial and is due to a kind of cubic cage inside which they are ripened.

Hatsukoi no Kaori Ichigo: the white strawberry

The term Hatsukoi no Kaori Ichigo means “scent of first love” and corresponds to the most expensive strawberry variety in the world: up to 10 euros for a single unit. The flavor is very similar to that of a normal large strawberry although less aromatic, the special feature lies in the color which has been made completely white, both inside and outside. internally it is white.
